Robert Cowles, MD

Professor of Surgery (Pediatrics)

I am a pediatric general surgeon who cares for newborns, infants, and children and their families. I started as an attending surgeon in 2004 and came to Yale in 2012. I have specific interests in gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary diseases in children. As an educator, I am a core faculty member of the general surgery residency program and have been the program director for the pediatric surgery fellowship at Yale since 2013. I teach medical students on the wards, in the operating room, and I give lectures on specific surgical conditions.

On a personal level, I immigrated to the United States from Brazil at age 10 and after that grew up in the Philadelphia area. My education has taken me from Philadelphia to Michigan, then New York City, and eventually Connecticut. I enjoy travel, sports, good food, and spending time with my family.
