Community Engagement

The goal of the YCCI community engagement program is to help ensure that communities and Yale researchers have the capacity to participate as full partners, which includes: joint establishment of Hub research priorities; a relationship built on bidirectional mutual respect, with equal value and reward for time and expertise; effective implementation and dissemination strategies; and increased public support for research, with the goal of ultimately improving the health and well-being of communities.

Over the past 15 years of CTSA support, Yale has engaged stakeholders across the translational spectrum, both within and outside the University, to advance the translation of new discoveries across the research continuum. These efforts have drawn upon the entire Yale Hub: our clinical practice and physicians, including patients from diverse ethnic backgrounds; community organizations, and faith-based and advocacy groups; educational institutions in the US and abroad; and industry and regulatory partners. The YCCI community engagement program continues to ensure that communities and Yale researchers have the capacity to participate as full partners, which includes: joint establishment of Hub research priorities; a relationship built on bidirectional mutual respect, with equal value and reward for time and expertise; effective implementation and dissemination strategies; and increased public support for research, with the goal of ultimately improving the health and well-being of communities.

Critical Innovations to integrate and enhance the engagement of community stakeholder as full partners across the translational science spectrum have included the work of the Community-Engaged Research (CEnR) Steering Committee and Cultural Ambassadors to Yale clinical research program.

Over the next cycle, a major focus will be the integration of community-engaged activities to support translation across the spectrum with programs to address effectively all elements of T1 to T2 (clinical trials engagement) and T3 – T4 (safe hospital discharge of patients with housing instability).

  • Creating and enhancing education and training opportunities for patients, students, investigators, clinicians and community partners from multiple fields to conduct translational research.

  • Providing community partners with the skills and resources to implement high quality translational research in community settings and creating infrastructure and fostering interdisciplinary collaborations required to advance translational research.

  • Increasing awareness, interest, and participation in translational research at Yale and disseminating research findings to the community.
