The Yale School of Medicine Department of Surgery is pleased to announce the following faculty promotions, as approved by the Board of Permanent Officers at its July 14, 2021 meeting:
- Bishwajit Bhattacharya, MD, promotion to the rank of Associate Professor (General Surgery, Trauma and Surgical Critical Care) in the Clinician-Educator Track, effective July 1, 2021.
- Dirk Johnson, MD, promotion to the rank of Associate Professor (General Surgery, Trauma and Surgical Critical Care) in the Clinician-Educator Track, effective July 1, 2021.
“We are tremendously proud to celebrate Dr. Bhattacharya and Dr. Johnson for their rank promotions — even more so to celebrate their consistent and continued growth and success in our academic system," said Department of Surgery Chair, Dr. Nita Ahuja.
Both Dr. Bhattacharya (BB as he's known, fondly) and Dr. Johnson completed their fellowship training years at Yale New Haven Hospital, joining the YSM faculty shortly thereafter.
BB straddles his clinical time between YNHH and the VA, where, since 2012, he has served as a surgical attending for some of the sickest patients — those critically injured or ill, and those in the SICU. His ability to "create a low stress environment," in the throes of such a "busy inner-city practice," has earned BB a regional and national reputation as a "rising star" in the field, and a favorite mentor among residents and colleagues, alike.
Dr. Johnson joined the YSM faculty in 2008. He is currently a department leader, serving as Medical Director of Surgical Services and ICU Director at Yale New Haven Hospital - Saint Raphael's Campus; and as a Yale Surgery Faculty Champion — a title and elite program granted to the department's highest-potential leaders.
"The promotion from Assistant to Associate Professor is an extraordinary milestone in a surgeon's career — the culmination of years and years of not only hard work, but of excellence. It is a source of great joy and honor to the entire community to acknowledge, formally, both BB and Dirk, for their consistent dedication to our mission," said Dr. Alan Dardik, Vice Chair of Faculty Affairs and co-Chair of the Surgery Faculty Affairs Committee.
