The Yale Surgery Citizens Helping Hand award recognizes an individual’s extraordinary contribution toward a specific project, initiative, or circumstance.

September Recipients

Elizabeth Calderoni, APRN, Colon and Rectal Surgery- “Approximately one year ago, Liz and I were working together on the surgical floor. A nurse came to our office stating a patient was having some chest pain-- thought to be anxiety. I went to see the patient and found the patient coming out of her room. The patient saw me, stated" help me" and she took two further steps towards me and passed out in my arms. . Much to my surprise, Liz was right behind me and started grabbing the needed equipment to assist me. The nursing staff called a RRT, the nurses were so helpful and there was Liz putting in orders, checking me and the patient. We were able to transfer the patient to the SICU safely.” - Evans K. Simmons

Amanda Cook, APP, Otolaryngology- “Amanda Cook is an excellent and highly skilled APP in the Department of Surgery. She goes above and beyond for her patients and she is always willing to help out her colleagues. She is always willing to be flexible and she is a team player. The Head and Neck department is lucky to have her! “ – Jacqueline Brenia

Alexander Frey, MD, General Surgery Resident – “On a particularly busy night at St. Raphael’s Hospital, I had a very sick patient in the ICU who needed a lot of my attention. Alex Frey, a lab resident, was assigned to be my intern that night, and he offered to take care of an emergent consult in the ED for me while I focused on my sick patient - improving patient care and my sanity!” - Daniel Kerekes

Alfonsina (Allie) Fraschilla, Division Administrator, Surgical Oncology | Endocrine | Thoracic Surgery – “Our faculty retreat absolutely would not have been possible without Allie's leadership. She not only worked incredibly hard on every detail but also provided guidance and structure that enabled our ideas to come to fruition. Allie truly had the vision and inspiration to create a great event for the entire faculty across delivery networks. Without missing a beat she was able to facilitate testing for all attendees, and at the 11th hour arranged AV help to pivot to a hybrid format. She perceived and delivered on the need for community within the Department of Surgery. Allie regularly goes above and beyond for her faculty and colleagues, making Yale Surgery a great place to work. We are extremely grateful for her efforts!” - Lucy Ruangvoravat
