Yale School of Medicine Professor of Surgery and Geriatrics Dr. Ronnie Rosenthal, has announced her retirement as Chief of Surgical Services at the VA Connecticut Healthcare System, following 28 years of service in the leadership position. Dr. Rosenthal will assume a new appointment as Senior Research Scientist effective October 1, as a member of Emeritus Faculty in the Department of Surgery.

A national search will be conducted to recruit a successor for the West Haven Center. Yale Faculty, Drs. Melissa Perkal and Joseph King Jr. will serve as Acting Chief and Interim Assistant Chief, respectively.

“Dr. Rosenthal has worked tirelessly throughout her career at the VA — as a leader, a surgeon, and a mentor. We thank Ronnie for her servant leadership and commitment to our community.” said YSM Department of Surgery Chair, Dr. Nita Ahuja.

Over the course of her tenure, Dr. Rosenthal has advanced the development of several clinical and educational programs both locally and nationally. In 2019, Dr. Rosenthal led the establishment of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Geriatric Surgery Verification Program, reaffirming her reputation as a national authority for optimal surgical care for the aging patient.

A formal reception honoring Dr. Rosenthal’s contributions will be held this fall.
