The Department of Surgery is pleased to announce Dr. Derek Steinbacher’s recent appointment as Medical Director for Innovation and Emerging Technologies, effective Jan. 1. In his new role, Dr. Steinbacher will serve as a Faculty liaison to Yale Innovations and industry partners, in order to identify, implement, and integrate emerging technologies and initiatives across the department’s surgical specialties.

“Vetting and providing the latest technologies to our patients is core to our mission at Yale. The current landscape is ripe with opportunity and presents a clear need for a dedicated Faculty champion to galvanize meaningful research partnerships and help to put structure around our physicians’ efforts for maximal benefit,” said Department of Surgery Chair, Dr. Nita Ahuja.

“Dr. Steinbacher’s track record of pioneering technologies lends tremendous value to the role. We are all very excited that he has accepted this additional role,” said Division Chief of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Dr. Bohdan Pomahac.

Dr. Steinbacher has introduced several advanced technologies into clinical practice in his roles as Director of the Craniofacial Surgery and Dental Programs, including the usage of artificial intelligence and 3D planning for complex and routine facial plastic surgeries. The Professor of Surgery (plastic & reconstructive) will collaborate with Faculty, Program Directors, and Researchers across the surgical specialties to foster multi-d industry relations and research opportunities.
