The Department of Surgery is pleased to announce Dr. Daniel Boffa as the new Division Chief for the Division of Thoracic Surgery, effective Sept. 1.

Dr. Boffa was promoted to the rank of Professor of Thoracic Surgery in 2019. Since joining the Department of Surgery in 2007, Dr. Boffa has grown his clinical practice into a destination program for the minimally-invasive treatment of esophageal and lung cancers. His research in health policy, in collaboration with the American College of Surgeons and Commission on Cancer, has led to new and improved surgical care and quality standards for cancer patients, nationally.

In his new role as Division Chief, Dr. Boffa will be responsible for managing the clinical, research and financial growth of thoracic surgery services across the health system, in addition to the mentorship of next generation surgical leaders.

“I am extremely excited to work with the incredible pool of talent that currently fills the faculty ranks in Drs. Justin Blasberg, Andrew Dhanasopon, Vincent Mase, and Gavitt Woodard, as well as our spectacular nurses, APPs and administrative support team. I also feel a tremendous sense of obligation to maintain the truly epic trajectory of the ‘Detterbeck Era,’” said Dr. Boffa.

Dr. Boffa’s promotion trajectory within the institution is testament to thoughtful succession planning by Dr. Detterbeck and Department leadership that will ensure the sustained success of our missions.

Dr. Boffa succeeds Dr. Frank Detterbeck, who has led the Division of Thoracic Surgery since 2005. He will continue his tenure as a full-time faculty member and Professor.

“Dr. Detterbeck’s commitment to our faculty, trainees, and patients is an inspiration to all of us. We are grateful for his service and dedication to the mission to develop the next generation of surgical leaders,” said Department of Surgery Chair, Dr. Nita. Ahuja.

“Dr. Boffa’s promotion trajectory within the institution is testament to thoughtful succession planning by Dr. Detterbeck and Department leadership that will ensure the sustained success of our missions. It is a source of great pride to the entire Yale Surgery Community.”
