Welcome from the Medical Director

Welcome to the Aortic Institute at Yale-New Haven Hospital. As the Medical Director of the Aortic Institute, I am very pleased that you have chosen to consider our Center of Excellence.

The Aortic Institute at Yale was formed over 20 years ago and is now one of the largest and busiest centers of its kind in the world. Our Institute incorporates nearly 5000 patients and performs over 150-175 aortic surgeries per year.

Through collaborations with our faculty and researchers at the Yale School of Medicine, we have achieved significant contributions in the field of genetics research and treatment options for Aortic disease. Our Center developed the first general screening blood test for thoracic aortic aneurysm (“RNA signature” test), identified specific mutations that underlie thoracic aortic disease, founded an international medical journal entitled AORTA (which now reaches over 11, 500 scientists and clinicians in over forty countries), developed the Next Generation routine genetic testing program for mutations leading to thoracic aortic aneurysm and dissection, and helped identify ‘triggers’ for aortic dissection.

We remain committed to identifying, treating and eradicating deaths from this important ‘silent killer’.

Our surgeons, medical physicians, advanced practice nurse clinicians, and research collaborators are top-rated. Our Hospital is one of the 5 largest hospitals in the country.

Finally, we are extraordinarily fortunate to have major funding from benevolent philanthropists and advocates who have supported and continue to support our efforts.

We thank you again for your interest, trust and support of our Aortic Institute and look forward to helping you in any way we can.

All my best,
Sandip K. Mukherjee, MD, FACC
