Interviews

Welcome to Yale School of Medicine!

All MD and MD-PhD interviews will be virtual for the entire 2023-2024 admission cycle

If the YSM Admissions Committee selects an applicant for an interview based upon a holistic and contextual review of submitted application information, then the individual will be notified of this decision and invited to schedule a virtual interview.

Helpful information about the virtual interview day process will be found in this website, along with links to several useful websites.

When are Interviews Held?

MD Applicants:

Virtual interviews for MD applicants are completed in one day and are held on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays each week from September through February.

MD applicants will be given a choice of a morning or an afternoon session for their interview day. Morning sessions run from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm EDT and afternoon sessions run from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm EDT.

MD-PhD Applicants

Virtual interviews for MD-PhD applicants are completed over a two day period (either on Monday/Tuesday or on Tuesday/Wednesday) during specific weeks in the months of November through February.

Day one of the virtual interview session will begin with an orientation meeting at 10:00am EDT via Zoom. Applicants should join the Zoom meeting by 9:45am EDT each day.

MD-PhD applicants should plan on completing their two day interview session at approximately 5:30pm EDT on the second day. Depending on individual schedules, some interviewees may finish their day earlier.

MD Interview Process

MD Interviews are completed in one day and are held on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

The virtual interview day will take place via Zoom. The interview day will begin with an orientation meeting with the Acting Director of Admissions. Throughout the rest of the day there will be two interviews (45 minutes each) with members of the Admissions Committee. In addition, there will be a "Faculty Meet and Greet" session with a member of the YSM faculty, who will give a short presentation on his/her work, followed by a question and answer period.

MD-PhD Interview Process

Virtual interviews for MD-PhD applicants are completed over a two-day period - (either Monday/Tuesday or Tuesday/Wednesday) during specific weeks in the months of November, December, January and February. The interviews will take place via Zoom.

You will be interviewed by two members of the MD Admissions Committee and two members of the MD-PhD Admissions Committee during your two-day interview session.

Over the course of the two days, you will also have time to speak informally with faculty members whose research interests you.

You are welcome to select up to 5 faculty from the list of current and recent MD-PhD student thesis advisors, Biological and Biomedical Sciences (BBS) Graduate Faculty, and/or faculty in the Yale Graduate School of Arts & Sciences. Please note that faculty who are members of the MD-PhD Interview Committee will not be available to meet with applicants informally.

Both sets of formal interviews are important, as we want to make sure that you are a good fit for our medical school, as well as our MD-PhD program.

Each interview day will start with an orientation meeting.

Over the course of two days you will have four formal interviews and meet informally with MD-PhD program leadership, including a program overview and Q&A with Program Director Dr. Barbara Kazmierczak and a small group meeting (non-evaluative) with an Associate Director.

Our current MD-PhD students will be available to share their experiences during the student-run session called SPIDEY (Student Perspectives on Identity, Diversity and Equity at Yale).

Applicants can expect to complete their interview days by approximately 5:30 pm EDT. However, at 8pm EDT there will be an evening social hosted by MD-PhD students.

MD-PhD Informal Faculty Meetings

An important part of your MD-PhD interview experience is the chance to speak informally with faculty whose research is of interest to you. You are welcome to select up to 5 faculty from the list of current and recent MD-PhD student thesis advisors, Biological and Biomedical Sciences (BBS)Graduate Faculty, and/or faculty in the Yale Graduate School of Arts & Sciences. Please note that faculty who are members of the MD-PhD Interview Committee will not be available to meet with applicants informally. Not all faculty requested will be available for an informal meeting, but we hope that you’ll have a chance to speak with at least 2 of them before your formal interview days.

Please note: We ask that you submit your requests for informal meetings soon so that we can reach out to the requested faculty. Most of these informal meetings should be scheduled before your interview days, but they may occur after your interview days if that is more mutually convenient. We will not be able to accommodate last-minute requests.
