Mini Concert by Onnuri Sarang Chamber Orchestra (Autism Orchestra) Visiting From Korea

This special mini concert performance by the Onnuri Sarang Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Yale alum Angie Sohn, will be co-hosted by the Yale Child Study Center and the Office of International Affairs on April 12, 2024 from 2:30-3:30 p.m. at 230 South Frontage Road, Cohen Auditorium, New Haven, CT. While registration is not required, RSVPs are requested via e-mail to world@yale.edu to help plan for refreshments.

This Korean musical group is visiting Yale while they are on a tour of New York and New Jersey, sponsored by the Hyosung Group, a Korean corporation which is also led by a Yale alumnus. The event will be a celebration of the musical talents of its members including four students with autism along with five teachers who are professional musicians.

Established by violinist Angela Inkyung Sohn (Yale School of Music, D.M.A.), the Onnuri Sarang Chamber Orchestra began in 1999 as a modest “Onnuri Music Room for the Disabled” at Onnuri Church in Korea and has now grown into a full chamber orchestra comprising 35 members with intellectual and developmental disabilities (including Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down Syndrome etc.). Over the years, the Onnuri Sarang Chamber Orchestra has performed over 600 concerts at hospitals, senior welfare and rehabilitation centers, as well as numerous churches and charity concerts throughout Korea and has also been invited to perform in the United States, Hong Kong, Japan, Germany and Czechoslovakia.

The Orchestra was invited to perform at the (Presidential) Blue House in Seoul, Korea, and has also been invited to perform alongside motivational speaker Nick Vujicic. Sponsored by Hyosung Group since 2013, members of the Orchestra have participated in the Teaching Class Program by cellist Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble, and recently performed at a private concert held at the Yongsan Presidential Office. The Onnuri Sarang Chamber Orchestra has performed at the Seoul Arts Center Concert Hall, Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall, Dinkelspiel Auditorium (Stanford University), and has made numerous appearances on Korean national television broadcasts including KBS, MBC, SBS, EBS and Christian broadcasts such as CGNTV, CBS and CTS.
