Biography
Dr. Dhanpat Jain is a Professor of Pathology and Internal Medicine (section of Digestive Diseases). Dr. Jain graduated from Mysore Medical College, Mysore, India and received his M.B.B.S degree in 1986. He subsequently received his M.D. Pathology degree from Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, India in 1991. He moved to the U.S. in 1995 and completed his Anatomic Pathology residency and Fellowship in Gastrointestinal Pathology at Yale University School of Medicine, and subsequently continued as a faculty there.
Dr. Jain is a nationally and internationally recognized gastrointestinal pathologist known for his diagnostic skills, research and teaching. He has more than 150 publications, many book chapters, books and reviews, all of which are largely in the field of gastrointestinal and liver pathology. He has delivered many lectures and participated in many courses at the national and international level. He is on the editorial board of several high impact journals in the field of gastrointestinal and liver disorders. His area of expertise is motility disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, for which he gets cases in consultation from across the globe. Dr. Jain is an accomplished teacher and has received many awards. He has continuously been nominated for “Best Doctors in America” for many years.

Research
Overview
Liver tumors: One of the major areas of my research interest liver tumors. Some of the studies have been collaborative efforts with other academic Institutions in the country, while some have been my own. We have evaluated various markers that can be applied in the diagnostic work-up of hepatocytic masses, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), hepatic adenoma (HA) and focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) over the years. Our ongoing research in this area is looking at new markers and their diagnostic utility in the work-up of hepatic masses. We are also studying the HCCs that arise in patients with cirrhosis and chronic liver disorders and compare them with those without cirrhosis and known liver disease.
One of my major areas of research interest in liver tumors is Cholangiocarcinoma (CC). It is the second most common primary malignant neoplasm of the liver. The precursor lesions of cholangiocarcinoma are not well understood. Based on observations from clinical cases, we suspect that many of these tumors arise from biliary microhamartomas or so called von-Meyenburg complexes (VMC). Our ongoing studies are focused on generating more molecular evidence to support progression of VMC to cholangiocarcinoma and build a cancer progression model for cholangiocarcinoma.
Motility disorders of the GI tract: Based on a case of visceral myopathy that I encountered in my clinical practice I realized that the interstitial cells of Cajal that play a major role in bowel motility, have not been studied in detail in such disorders. This led to a study of these cells in a variety of motility disorders. Subsequently, I have been interested in motility disorders of the GI tract and get cases in consultation from all over the world.

Overview
Dhanpat Jain, MD, is a pathologist specializing in gastrointestinal (GI) and liver diseases and cancers. Before he graduated high school, Dr. Jain knew he would pursue a career in medicine. Not until later in his medical training did he discover that he could apply his interests in visual art and pattern recognition to a field like pathology. “It is a natural fit for me,” Dr. Jain says.
On a daily basis, Dr. Jain examines tissue samples and biopsies from patients with suspected GI and liver diseases. He has extensive experience with samples that reflect motility, or movement, disorders of the GI tract. “These are uncommon disorders and not many people examine cases like this,” Dr. Jain says. For this reason, he regularly consults with physicians and other pathologists across the globe on challenging cases.
As a professor of pathology and of medicine (digestive diseases) at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Jain researches liver tumors, inflammatory bowel disease, and cancers related to the liver and digestive tract.
