The Pathology Retreat Held each October on the West Campus, this daylong event brings Pathology residents and faculty together for an agenda that includes featured speakers, a poster session, trivia, a scavenger hunt of sorts where people searched for things they have in common (such as attending the same undergraduate school), and awards.
Yale Pathology Day Held in the fall in the Brady Memorial Lab building, this half-day event allows public school students to explore careers in pathology. Students spend time in the Department of Pathology, learning about the life-saving work done every day and that a rewarding career in pathology does not require a medical degree. Pathology residents, graduate students, faculty, and staff members volunteer their time to discuss their work with students, and explain why they chose a career in pathology.
Graduation Ceremony Held each June, this event celebrates the accomplishments of graduating residents and fellows from the Departments of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. The ceremony in Hamden includes faculty, graduating students and their families, as well as current residents and fellows.
United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP) annual meeting Held in a different location each June, this event brings together the world’s best pathologists to discuss and share research and new discoveries. Pathology residents regularly present in poster and other sessions at USCAP.
National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week video contest Our residents participate in this annual contest each spring for the best video, a fun event that provides a little levity for people in a serious profession.
Annual Residents versus Faculty Soccer Match Held on a weekend morning in the spring, this fun event brings faculty and residents together in a setting completely apart from the lab and microscopes. It is a fun, family day.
Various Social Events Our residents work extremely hard, so they understand the importance of having fun and bonding away from the lab. New Haven and its surrounding area provide ample opportunities for this.

The Departments of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine both have designated faculty involved in resident wellness. The program has a wellness curriculum and a resident wellness committee. The YNHH GME office supports an annual house staff wellness week and there is 24/7 availability to the House Staff Lounge, well-stocked with coffee and food items, free of charge. In addition, the program has policies to ensure residents have the opportunity to get adequate rest following call. Other amenities include available call rooms; academic days to help residents catch up on any outstanding clinical work or do activities of their choice; Pathology Day celebrations; starting their 2nd year residents are eligible for a potential hospital-wide bonus; and CME subsidized dinner/drink/activity with house staff across the YNHH system on the first Friday of every month.
Living in New Haven

Do you need a car?
- Probably. There are housing options located within a short walk to the hospital where many trainees live each year. There is also a public bus system in the city of New Haven. However, retail and grocery options are limited in the city, so if you are interested in a large variety of options a car is almost definitely necessary.
- While most rotations take place at the YNHH main hospital and the Veteran’s Affairs hospital (which can be reached by shuttle from YNHH), rotations at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and Bridgeport Hospital are offsite and require transportation.
Housing
- Many residents live in the city of New Haven either within walking distance of the hospital or a short drive away. The nearby suburbs are also very popular, especially with residents with families.
- Most trainees rent, but some do purchase homes.
Childcare options for residents
There is a Child Care Center located between the YNHH main campus and St Raphaels campus that gives priority to children of YNHH employees. Many of our residents, fellows, and faculty have utilized this facility for childcare.
