Smiles Everywhere

December 03, 2023

Hi everyone,

We had another spectacular fellowship match this year. Everyone matched, and the smiles at Wednesday night’s celebration were a joy to behold. The smiles of residents pursuing hospitalist and primary care positions were equally big.

We always do well in the Match, but I knew weeks ago that this would be a special year. The first clue came when we began facing scheduling challenges because residents had so many interviews. The Chiefs worked nonstop to arrange coverage while ensuring our teams were staffed. I can’t imagine a Chief group more dedicated to their residents.

The second clue came with phone calls from fellowship directors, seeking confirmation that our residents’ CVs, letters, and interpersonal skills were as good as they seemed, which they are. Our residents are extraordinary clinicians, committed to their patients and undaunted by hard work. Their research, QI, and educational accomplishments show they’ve made the most of Yale’s offerings. Their service on committees and interest groups show they’ll bring leadership to their positions.

Our residents embody the values of the Beeson Medical Service: collaboration, community, and kindness. We succeed because we collaborate. We thrive because we are a community where people like and respect one another. And despite long days fighting disease, we soar, uplifted by kindness. Our residents bring these values wherever they go.

It was a joy to see so many smiles on Wednesday, and it’s reassuring to know that our residency motto, “good as any, nicer than most,” remains our perennial ticket to success.

Congratulations to our residents and special thanks to the faculty and staff who provided boundless opportunity, mentorship, and encouragement along the way.

Enjoy your rainy Sunday, everyone. I plan to stay warm and dry as I read 44 personal statements, preparing for Tuesday’s interviews!

Mark
