In Pursuit of Excellence (Time for a Break)

by Mark David Siegel

Hi everyone,

I just finished two weeks in the Stepdown Unit, where we cared for a huge number of patients with babesiosis and an equally huge number with PE. The medical and nursing teams were exceptional, and the teaching, learning, and healing were superb.

It’s a blessing to be a physician, and I can’t imagine a more rewarding career. But our profession demands sacrifice, which leads to long hours and time away from family. To be excellent physicians, we need to take breaks from work, which is what I’m doing now.

For the next two weeks, Francesca and I will be enjoying our annual father-daughter vacation. This year, we’re traveling through the Canadian Maritimes, where we plan to explore the seashore, eat lobster and ice cream, read, play scrabble, and spend precious time together before she leaves for college this fall. Today’s destination is Fundy National Park,* followed by a drive to Halifax.

I’ll be away until August 14. Until then, take care and stay safe,
Mark

*Thank you, Dr. Ashley Losier, for the expert tips!
