The Sickle Cell Program at Smilow Cancer Hospital includes a team of experts all focused on the care of patients with sickle cell disease. The comprehensive team consists of hematologists, nurses, pharmacists, a psychiatrist, social workers, and chaplains. Together they provide care for patients with a family-centered approach, provide education for patients and families, healthcare professionals, and the community, and lead research to improve the care of people living with this rare inherited blood disorder.
The team strives to ease the suffering and burden of sickle cell warriors and advance care options by building on the program’s strong foundation and rallying the tremendous resources of Yale; but most importantly, the knowledge of the community. A dedicated 13-bed inpatient unit is also available to patients in need of inpatient care. This enables the team to provide continuity of care for patients by a specialized team.
