The Yale Pepper Older Americans Independence Center (OAIC) is proud to announce two new leaders within its ranks.
Lauren Ferrante, MD, MHS, assistant professor of medicine (pulmonary, critical care, & sleep medicine), has been appointed as the director of the Operations Core and Andrew Cohen, MD, DPhil, assistant professor of medicine (geriatrics) has been named the associate director of the Research Education Core.
Ferrante is a prior recipient of the OAIC Scholar award for her study, “Critical Illness, Disability, and Vulnerability in Older Persons.” Over the past five years, she has worked closely with the field and informatics components of the Operations Core, making her an ideal candidate for this leadership role. Cohen also received an OAIC Scholar award for his study “Guardianship and Medical Decision Making for the Unbefriended Elderly.” His appointment to the Research Education Core is a natural extension of the role he has played organizing the seminars and workshops offered by the Core. Both Ferrante and Cohen are recipients of the Paul B. Beeson Emerging Leaders Career Development Award in Aging.
Since it was established in 1992, the OAIC has provided support to a large number of junior and senior investigators pursuing aging-related research. Its mission is to provide the resources to support innovation for aging research that is directed at enhancing the independence of older persons and to develop the next generation of leaders in aging research. The unifying theme of the OAIC is the investigation of multifactorial geriatric conditions, encompassing single conditions resulting from multiple contributing factors or affecting multiple outcome domains and multiple conditions occurring simultaneously.
