McGivney Cancer Center: Hamden Campus
In 2009, the cancer services from the McGivney Cancer Center was extended to 2080 Whitney Avenue in Hamden. The facility was designed to meet all of the needs of the people we serve by a multidisciplinary and caring staff. In 2016 there have been significant equipment upgrades including a new Phillips CT simulator which allows 4D imaging. This technology permits treatments to take into account changes in the position of tumors due to breathing. In addition, a sophisticated surface imaging system is being installed that significantly improves the accuracy of treatments particularly for breast cancer and lung cancer patients. The linear accelerator has been upgraded with the latest technology including VMAT (volumetric modulated arc therapy). The treatment planning system has been upgraded to the Varian Eclipse system allowing complex planning and coordination with the planning department at the main campus. The department is fully integrated, utilizing the latest software with Smilow Cancer Hospital. There is a video conferencing system set up in the dedicated conference room allowing participation in departmental quality assurance programs including weekly chart rounds as well as subspecialty tumor boards. There is a full complement of staff including physicians, an advanced practice nurse, a full time medical physicist, a full time senior dosimetrists, nurses and therapists. Ancillary services are provided including the services of a certified nutritionist and social services. A boutique is on-site. The center provides free, easy parking in a small and individualized atmosphere and caring staff providing expert, state-of-the-art care.
