The Office of International Medical Student Education OIMSE was established to facilitate opportunities for medical students to experience medicine as it is practiced throughout the world and to enrich the learning environment at YSM by providing opportunities for students from international schools to come to Yale for clinical electives.

Program Description
APA Minority Fellowship The American Psychiatric Association (APA) Minority Fellowships Program (MFP) is designed to
  • provide fellowship recipients with enriching training experiences through participation in the APA September and Annual Meetings;
  • provide recipients with resources to support activities that enhance culturally relevant aspects of their training program;
  • stimulate their interest in pursing training in areas of psychiatry where minority groups are underrepresented, such as research, child psychiatry, and addiction psychiatry; and
  • develop leadership to improve the quality of mental health care for the following federally recognized ethnic minority groups: American Indians, Native Alaskans, Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, Native Pacific Islanders, African Americans and Hispanics/Latinos.
NIH/NIMH: Fogarty International Center Fogarty International Center is one of NIH’s principal funders of global mental health research for Early Stage Investigators (ESI). As an ESI, you may be eligible to apply for the following:

NIH/NIMH: Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholars and Fellows Program
  • Provides opportunity for ESIs to do research and/or clinical work in low- and middle-income countries.

  • Go to "Section VII. Agency Contacts" for a list of participating institutes and their contact information. Once you decide which institutes’ research priorities best match your interests, request the contact information of the principal investigator (PI) from the Agency Contact. You must apply directly to the PI and not the participating institutes.
Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships are funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Higher Education Act, Title VI. Fellowships are available to graduate and professional school students whose academic work includes foreign language study and whose career plans include teaching, public service or business related to African Studies, European Studies, or Middle East Studies. The eligible languages for each competition are announced on the application. FLAS fellowships are available for the summer and for the academic year. Only U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the U.S. are eligible.
Lindsay Fellowship for Research in Africa The Lindsay Fellowship for Research in Africa supports grants to graduate and professional students for summer research in order to increase understanding of Africa among Yale students and faculty. Highest priority will be given in the following order: (1) graduate and professional school students; (2) junior faculty. Only those returning to Yale in the semester following the award are eligible to receive an award. One or more fellowships of up to $3,000 will be awarded for summer travel and fieldwork expenses in Africa for relevant research, study projects, internships or conferences (paper presentation at conference required). All applicants must apply through the Yale Student Grants & Fellowships database.
NIH Director's Early Independence Award This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) issued by the National Institutes of Health solicits applications for the NIH Director’s Early Independence Award (DP5) from institutions/organizations that propose to appoint and support exceptional early career scientists directly following the completion of their PhD (or equivalent) or MD (or equivalent) training into an independent academic research position, thereby omitting the traditional post-doctoral training period from their career path.
NIH Extramural Loan Repayment Program NIH wants to encourage outstanding health professionals to pursue careers in biomedical, behavioral, social, and clinical research. If you commit at least two years to conducting qualified research funded by a domestic nonprofit organization or U.S. federal, state, or local government entity, NIH may repay up to $35,000 of your qualified student loan debt per year, including most undergraduate, graduate, and medical school loans. Loan repayment benefits are in addition to the institutional salary you receive for your research. Areas of research include but are not limited to:
