The Yale Pediatrics Department’s Award for Clinical Excellence (Yale Peds ACE) recognizes exemplary clinicians who go above and beyond for patients, deliver the highest quality of care and personify healing, innovation and collaboration. This individual embodies the Department’s Vision as a Healer, Innovator and Collaborator. The award for August 2025 went to Chelsea Lepus, DO, assistant professor of Pediatric Gastroenterology & Hepatology! Dr. Lepus developed the inpatient nutrition service within GI in collaboration with the PICU, NICU, and CICU and expanding to other inpatient service, overseeing all nutrition consults including enteral and parenteral nutrition, and revamped our short bowel program in collaboration with the department of surgery. Please join us in congratulating Dr. Lepus on this recognition!

In early September, another successful Teddy Bear Clinic was held! Arushi Jauhari, MD, one of our pediatric hospitalists, and Katie Tighe, our assistant manager, as well as 5 community pediatricians volunteered their time to examine teddy bears and dolls and promote the Children's Hospital at the Inaugural Bridgeport Green Festival. Our wonderful physician liaison, Janene Grabowski, provided us with brochures and the Bridgeport Hospital burn team donated some teddy bears and other fun giveaways to make this event truly special.

Assistant Professor of Pediatrics (Hospital Medicine)
Dr. Bickerton is a pediatric hospitalist in the Department of Pediatrics Section of Hospital Medicine. He graduated from the Yale School of Medicine MD/PhD program in 2021. His research in biomedical engineering focused on the development of novel nanoparticle-based therapies in autoimmune disease models. He completed residency in Pediatrics at Yale New Haven Children's Hospital and served as chief resident before joining the department as faculty.
Assistant Professor
Caroline Black, MD, is a pediatric emergency medicine physician dedicated to acute care and management of pediatric emergencies that range from simple viral and bacterial infections to medical and surgical emergencies such as appendicitis, obstructions, and orthopedic reductions. In her role, she offers swift and methodical care for patients ranging 0 to 21 years old as well as support for patient families during these, sometimes, nerve-wracking visits. Dr. Black completed pediatric residency at Connecticut Children's Medical Center in 2016. She then went on to complete a Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship at the Mount Sinai Hospital in 2019 and has been an assistant professor practicing at Hackensack University Medical Center prior to joining Yale New Haven Health.
Assistant Professor of Pediatrics (Respiratory)
Mahrukh Shah, MD is an assistant professor in the section of Pediatric Pulmonology, Allergy, Immunology and Sleep Medicine at Yale School of Medicine. Dr. Shah received her medical degree from the Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences, Pakistan. She completed her residency training in pediatrics at Brookdale Hospital Medical Center and pediatric pulmonology fellowship at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. Dr. Shah treats children of all ages with a range of lung problems including asthma, cystic fibrosis, interstitial lung diseases and bronchopulmonary dysplasia. She has a special interest in childhood interstitial lung disorders, primary ciliary dyskinesia, bronchiectasis and airway metabolomics.
Assistant Professor of Pediatrics
Dr. Silver completed her medical degree at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, followed by residency in child neurology and fellowship in pediatric neurocritical care at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Her clinical focus is in the care of critically ill children with or at risk for brain injury (for example, stroke, status epilepticus, traumatic brain injury, neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, and other conditions). She also cares for patients in the clinic, providing ongoing neurologic care and supporting recovery after a hospital stay. Her academic and research interests include neuromonitoring, prognostication, and outcomes after cardiac arrest.

Following a comprehensive national search conducted in collaboration with the AMN Healthcare/Merritt Hawkins search firm and our multidisciplinary colleagues in the Children’s Hospital, we are delighted to announce the selection of Soumya Nyshadham, MD, as our new pediatric anesthesiology chief. Nyshadham is our interim division chief who was recruited from Emory University School of Medicine to rejoin our pediatric anesthesia faculty in 2022. While at Emory, Nyshadham served as clinical director of the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) Egleston Hospital Operating Rooms and on the Pediatric Transplant Team.

In partnership with the newly created Yale Biomedical Imaging Institute, Women’s Health Research at Yale is proud to co-sponsor a project, up to $70,000, that uses imaging to focus on sex differences in diagnosis, treatment, or prognostication for a given disease as part of their FY26 Fund for Exploratory Studies. Faculty are encouraged to apply for funding to support bold exploratory imaging studies that foster inter-departmental collaborations on topics that have great potential of high impact to health and disease.

The Charles H. Hood Foundation is pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for the Child Health Research Awards for the funding period beginning January 2026.
As the Foundation’s premier program, the Child Health Research Awards support innovative and high-impact pediatric research in the New England area. Twice a year, we fund promising projects in the critical phases of child health development—projects that may carry higher risk but hold the potential for groundbreaking advances in pediatric health.
By supporting the best and brightest early-career investigators, the Hood Foundation fills funding gaps, accelerates innovative discoveries, and positions awardees to become future leaders in their fields. Many of our awardees go on to secure additional funding and make lasting contributions to pediatric health.

The Yale Institute for Global Health (YIGH) is pleased to announce the selection of Aline Herlopian, MD; Michelle Telfer, DNP, MPH; and Alla Vash-Margita, MD as the inaugural recipients of the Global Health Education Innovation Award. About 40 backpacks stuffed with all the school supplies and 14 lunch boxes filled with toothbrushes and small school supplies are being given out this month for back-to-school!

This summer, ITS will begin to update Yale IDs and card readers. This is part of Yale Operations’ ongoing commitment to maintain and enhance Yale's infrastructure. This effort minimizes disruptions by considering the need to use Yale IDs across multiple areas of campus, including parking, facilities, the university library, student services, printing services, athletics, and hospitality.
The update introduces newer technology necessary to better protect our campus community through improved security and system reliability. ITS will communicate detailed information regarding ID distribution, specific implementation timelines, and additional phases of the initiative in the near future. Community members will receive direct instructions about when and where to obtain their new Yale IDs.

Many parents and caregivers of the chronically sick children for whom we provide care have concerns about immigration enforcement and the impact it may have upon the health and wellbeing of their children. Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. It is essential for surgeries, cancer treatment, chronic illnesses, and traumatic injuries. The need for blood is constant, and only volunteer donors can fulfill that need for patients in our community.
Dr. Barry Boyd of Greenwich Hospital spoke with News12 in early July about the blood donation shortage in the tri-state area. All blood types are needed, but there is an urgent call for donors with Type O blood.
