Biography

Robert Matera, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Medicine (Medical Oncology and Hematology) and cares primarily for patients with genitourinary (GU) cancers at Smilow Cancer Hospital in Waterbury, and also in New Haven. He received his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine, and completed his residency at Rhode Island Hospital/Brown University where he served as Chief Resident. He then pursued his fellowship at Yale School of Medicine.

During his residency training, Dr. Matera received the ‘Exceptional Teaching by House Staff’ award as well as a ‘Teaching Excellence’ award. During his time in fellowship, Dr. Matera’s research focused on the tumor microenvironment composition and its role is disease progression and treatment resistance. He also participated in the design and initiation of multiple clinical trials. Dr. Matera will focus on trial development for patients with GU malignancies, and more specifically, making these trials accessible to patients in the community outside of New Haven.
