Biography

Dr. Matthay graduated from Tufts University School of Medicine in 1970 and trained in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine (PCCM) at University of Colorado Medical Center in Denver from 1970 – 1975. In 1975, he joined the faculty in the Department of Medicine, Pulmonary and Critical Care section at Yale as an Assistant Professor. In 1979, he was appointed Associate Professor and in 1984, Professor of Medicine. In 1993, he was appointed the Boehringer Ingelheim Professor of Medicine. Dr Matthay was Associate Director of the Yale PCCM section from 1975 – 1988 and 1990 – 2010. From 1988-1990, he was Acting Chief of the PCCM Section and from 1990-1994, he was Associate Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine.

From 1975-2002, Dr. Matthay was Director of the training program in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Yale and he is currently Ex-officio Director of this training program. He serves as an attending in the PCCM Fellows Winchester Chest Clinic and he also serves as a Yale New Haven Hospital inpatient attending.

Dr. Matthay is a senior member of the Yale Thoracic Oncology Program (TOP). Recently, he edited a book on lung cancer with a TOP program colleague, Dr. Lynn Tanoue (Clinics in Chest Medicine: Lung Cancer, 12/2011).

Research

Overview

Dr. Matthay has continuing interest in the epidemiology and etiology of lung cancer. He and two colleagues (Drs. Lynn Tanoue and Charles Dela Cruz) have written a chapter on the epidemiology and etiology of lung cancer for the most recent edition of the Fishman Textbook, Pulmonary Diseases Diseases and Disorders (2015)

Dr Matthay serves on the editorial board of several medical journals, including Journal of Intensive Care Medicine, Seminars in Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine and Clinical Pulmonary Medicine.
