Seth Powsner, MD, professor of psychiatry and of emergency medicine at Yale is the new president of the American Association for Emergency Psychiatry. His two-year term began this month at the American Psychiatric Association's annual meeting in Philadelphia, PA.

Since 2000, Dr. Powsner has served as Director of Yale-New Haven Hospital's Crisis Intervention Unit, located in the Hospital's Emergency Department. The Unit provides psychiatric assessment, treatment and referrals for adults who are experiencing a psychiatric emergency.

Dr. Powsner's research focuses on clinical data presentation and education. He explores how data can be presented to best help trainees assess a patient's medical history and to pursue further treatment options. He is also exploring digital video as a teaching tool for active clinical environments.

The American Association for Emergency Psychiatry is a multidisciplinary organization whose members include directors of psychiatric emergency services, psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, psychologists, physician assistants, educators and other professionals involved in emergency psychiatry. The Association promotes timely, compassionate, and effective mental health services, regardless of ability to pay, in all crisis and emergency care settings.
