Hi everyone,
This Wednesday at 9 A.M., Program Directors everywhere will be opening residency applications, while I’ll be…touring Argentina. I’m typically quick off the blocks, but this week we’ll be in Buenos Aires for a wedding, so the applications will have to wait (though I may peek).
Last year, I toyed with AI software to expedite reviews since we get thousands of applications, but I still prefer reading one file at a time. This year, students can signal 15 programs, 3 “gold” and 12 “silver.” We’ll prioritize those who signal us, but I’m not sure how or if I’ll distinguish gold and silver since many students probably can’t decide which programs to place in their top three.
Signal or not, I’ll review every file, sifting through grades, scores, MSPEs, letters of recommendation, publications, leadership accomplishments, and personal statements. We seek candidates driven to become investigators, educators, advocates, and master clinicians, and we especially seek candidates with diverse life stories, emotional intelligence, and commitment to teamwork.
There are too many superb candidates to invite them all, so we’ll create a waiting list for those not invited in the first round. We’re targeting October 11 as our invitation date. Physician scientist track invitations will go out separately since those applications undergo multiple reviews by the residency, PSTP leadership, and fellowships. As in the past, we will offer an information webinar to preliminary applicants in lieu of formal interviews.
Our first of 14 interview days is Friday, October 25. In next Sunday’s PD note, I’ll discuss what each of you can do to help recruit another exceptional class of Yale interns. And I’ll also share pictures from South America.
Take care, everyone. We’re off to JFK.
