Hockenberry Appointed Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs

January 04, 2024

Dear members of the YSPH community,

I am thrilled to announce the appointment of Jason Hockenberry, PhD, as our inaugural Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs, effective January 1, 2024.

The Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs will be a key member of the school’s leadership team, working closely with Alyson Zeitlin and the Office of Faculty Affairs as well as the other associate deans, program directors, and chairs. The primary responsibility of this position is to ensure the support, development, progress, and sustained success of our faculty in all ranks and appointments. The Associate Dean will also help lead faculty governance as we move into independence. Finally, the Associate Dean will work with me and our other faculty leaders to build resources and improve our organizational climate for faculty, while also collaborating with the entire leadership team to realize our compelling vision for the future of public health.

As you doubtless know, Dr. Hockenberry is well poised to lead, support and advocate for our faculty members. Dr. Hockenberry’s academic career has been marked not just by academic excellence, but also by a commitment to helping early career faculty advance their research and develop as leaders in their fields. He served as a PhD program director at his previous institution and has mentored numerous PhD students and junior faculty across several institutions and schools, including here at Yale. He has been a respected member of our faculty for over three years, having joined us from Emory during the pandemic. He has a strong understanding of our school, broad knowledge of academic culture and faculty development best practices, facility with relevant policies and procedures, and demonstrated success in fostering an inclusive academic environment.

Dr. Hockenberry currently serves as Chair of the Department of Health Policy and Management, and he will continue as department chair until a new chair is chosen. (We plan to launch a search in the new academic year.)

I would like to express my gratitude to the search committee for their hard work in identifying our inaugural Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs, as well as to all who contributed through nominations, meetings, or the ongoing work of the ad hoc appointments committee. Throughout this process, YSPH’s dedication, professionalism, and commitment to excellence has been evident.

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Hockenberry to this impactful new role!

Sincerely,

Megan Ranney
