Seminar in Public Health Modeling

The Global Burden of Climate Change-4 Million Deaths and Counting

How many people have died because of climate change? At least 4 million - costing the world potentially US$ trillions - but the last estimate is now two decades out of date. In this talk, Carlson will present a brief history of the field of health impact attribution, including the methods that let scientists attribute deaths not just to greenhouse gas emissions, but to the contributions of specific countries and companies. He will discuss our new effort to develop a Global Burden of Climate Change Study, and what we already know about how the burden of climate change has increased as of the last five years.

Dr. Carlson is an Assistant Professor of Epidemiology at Yale University School of Public Health. His work explores the challenges faced by health systems in the Anthropocene, with a focus on climate change and epidemic risks. He is also the executive director of Verena, an NSF Biology Integration Institute that conducts global collaborative research on bat and mosquito-borne viruses.
