Olino Receives YSM’s Leah M. Lowenstein Award

Kelly Olino, MD, assistant professor of surgery (oncology) at the Yale Department of Surgery, received the 2024 Leah M. Lowenstein Award for excellence in the promotion of humane and egalitarian medical education.

The Leah M. Lowenstein Award is presented annually by the Office for Women in Medicine at the Yale School of Medicine’s commencement ceremony. Named in memory of the first female dean of a co-educational medical school, the award recognizes a faculty member who influences students regardless of gender, race, or socioeconomic background. Past recipients include Ninani Kombo, MD, Silvia Vilarinho, MD, PhD, Anna Reisman, MD, Margaret J. Bia, M.D., FW ’78, and Howard Forman, MD, MBA.

Dr. Olino is the Clinical Director of the Smilow Melanoma Program. She attended Cornell University and studied medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, where she completed her residency training. She later pursued surgical oncology training at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Olino joined the Yale School of Medicine in 2018 from the University of Texas. A prolific researcher on tumor immunology, she is a past recipient of the Society for Surgical Oncology’s Clinical Investigator Award and the Clinical Excellence Award from the Yale Cancer Center.

Recently voted as a most influential educator by the medical students, Dr. Olino is the recipient of multiple teaching awards including the Anthony Imbembo Resident Teaching Award, the Department of Surgery Medical Student Teaching Award, and the Golden Scalpel Medical Student Teaching Award.
