Overview
Rey Ramirez, MD, is an orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in hand reconstruction and microsurgery in children who have acquired and congenital hand conditions.
“Every child is unique, and those with problems with their hands present unique challenges,” Dr. Ramirez says. “It is fascinating to help figure out how to make a kid’s hand work as well as possible. It is also very rewarding to see children get better.”
Hand surgery can seem like a major event for a child, and Dr. Ramirez provides reassurance by explaining what will happen in terms they understand. “I talk to the children, not just the parents, to make sure that I am meeting their needs and they understand what treatments they are about to undergo,” he says.
An assistant professor at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Ramirez has research interests in both pediatric hand problems and diversity in medicine.
