Education

We focus on ultrasound education from the time our residents enter their intern year. Starting off with a pre-internship orientation course, we build on establishing solid core knowledge during a one-month rotation in the PGY-1 year. Residents can focus on ultrasound as their Area of Concentration (AOC) in their senior years and are encouraged to develop more advanced skills by choosing an ultrasound elective. Residents attend weekly video reviews during their rotations / electives and perform scanning shifts with the fellows or ultrasound faculty. They also attend semi-annual journal clubs during AOC meetings as well as meetings hosted in conjunction with the University of Connecticut EM Ultrasound residents. Residents also use ultrasound heavily during their Bridgeport ED rotations, as well as on their international electives.

We introduce ourselves to students during their anatomy laboratory sessions in the first year of medical school, where they start to integrate lab knowledge with real-time clinical applications. We actively participate in EMIG simulation sessions and events. In addition, students are exposed to daily use of ultrasound during the Emergency Medicine clerkship component and can choose to take two-week EM Ultrasound electives in their 4th and 5th years to hone their skills.

Students rotating with us also attend weekly tape-review sessions and scan with ultrasound faculty, fellows and residents.

Currently, we’re embarking on a medical student project to bring ultrasound into the longitudinal student curriculum!

We welcome outside rotators (medical students and residents) to set up EM Ultrasound electives with us for 2 or 4 weeks. Timing may be limited depending on the number of internal Yale medical students / residents rotating in a given month. We are also open to having international medical students set up ultrasound electives with us.

We have a growing group of mid-level colleagues and are engaged in providing frequent ultrasound education to them during clinical shifts as well as through semi-annual courses.
