On Sunday, August 4th, in an historic first appearance by a YSM Dean, Nancy J. Brown, MD, welcomed over 85 alumni & guests at the National Medical Association (NMA) Annual Convention & Scientific Assembly in New York City.
In a nod to history, the evening began with an acknowledgment of the proposed New Haven college, that if it had been realized, would have been the nation’s first HBCU – in 1831.
Dean Brown provided an update on YSM and her vision for inclusive excellence at the medical school.
In addition, surprise guest, Deputy Dean Darin Latimore, MD, chief diversity officer, and associate professor of Internal Medicine, provided an extensive review of YSM pathway programs.
Both Dean Brown and Deputy Dean Latimore fielded questions from guests. Twenty-one prospective students attended the reception and eagerly engaged with faculty, staff, and alumni.
Over cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, an intergenerational discourse occurred. Old friends reconnected, new bonds formed, and alumni shared stories of their journeys since graduation.
The event was capped off with door prizes of several signed copies of Professor David Blight’s text, “Yale and Slavery.”
