Dr. Illuzzi has a special interest in the normal physiology of pregnancy and childbirth. As Medical Director of the Vidone Birthing Center at the St. Raphael Campus of Yale-New Haven Hospital, she leads a team of certified nurse midwives, obstetricians, and nurses devoted to supporting evidence-based physiologic birth. By creating a calming environment, encouraging freedom of movement, water immersion, continuous labor support, and individualized care, her team supports women during childbirth while minimizing interventions when possible or desired. When special interventions are needed such as epidural, cesarean delivery, or newborn concerns arise, anesthesia and neonatal providers are ready to assist. Dr. Illuzzi first introduced nitrous oxide in labor to the Vidone Birthing Center and has also supported the introduction of aromatherapy, acupressure, and in services to promote more physiologic birthing positions.
