Professor Emeritus of Internal Medicine

Biography

I obtained my initial Medical Education at the Christian Medical College, Vellore, India where I graduated obtaining the M.B.B.S. degree in 1965. Later after completion of my residency in Internal Medicine, I obtained an M.D. in 1969, which also required the submission of a dissertation. I then served as a Lecturer in Medicine and Faculty in the Welcome Research Unit from 1969 until 1974.

I came to Yale in 1974 to train in Gastroenterology. After completing my training I joined the faculty as Assistant Professor in Medicine in 1978 and rose through the ranks to be Professor of Medicine in 1992. Until 1998 I worked mostly at the Yale Affiliated Connecticut Veterans Administration Hospital and served as Associate Chief of Digestive Diseases from 1988 to 1998 and as Associate Chief of Medicine from 1995 to 1998. In 1998 I moved to the Yale campus as Program Director of Internal Medicine, (Traditional Medicine Program), a position that I held until 2011. During this time I also worked on the faculty of the Section of Digestive Diseases, which I continued to do until my retirement in 2016, at which time I was appointed Professor Emeritus, Medicine, Digestive Diseases, Yale University School of Medicine.

Over the years my research interests and publications involved bile acid metabolism in tropical sprue, regulation of gastric secretion of Pepsinogen and Intrinsic Factor, Vitamin B12 absorption, and Laser-Induced Fluorescence Spectroscopy in the detection of dysplasia in the colon.

Presently I continue to serve as the Course Director for the teaching of Gastroenterology and Hepatology to Preclinical Medical Students in the Energy & Metabolism Master Course and serve on a few committees in the Department of Student Education.
