Clinical Care

Overview

Cary Caldwell, MD, has been a gastroenterologist and a transplant hepatologist for more than 20 years, treating patients with issues ranging from general conditions such as acid reflux disease to cirrhosis of the liver severe enough to require transplantation surgery.

Dr. Caldwell was inspired to pursue medicine in both hepatology and liver transplantation in medical school at University of Pittsburgh, which he says had one of the busiest liver transplant programs in the world. “This was a most exciting area of medicine at the time,” he says, “and I was able to combine my interests in immunology, the challenges of internal medicine diagnosis, and gastroenterology,” he says.

In his role as a transplant hepatologist at Yale, Dr. Caldwell treats patients both before and after they’ve had transplantation surgery. “I take pride in trying to find the most successful medical treatments and, when necessary, definitive liver transplantation with our surgical colleagues,” he says. “Once surgery becomes necessary, I continue to be a patient advocate, caring for them pre- and post-operatively.”

In addition, he cares for patients with such conditions as chronic viral hepatitis, cholestasis and autoimmune disease. He also treats ulcer disease, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and colon polyps and malignancy.

“The rewards of working in this field are many, including, the feedback from patients after successful treatment, whether medical or surgical,” Dr. Caldwell says. “In addition, there is the privilege of working with medical students, nurses, residents, fellows, and surgeons. Our team approach to patient care and learning at Yale is enriching for me as well as for them.”

A member of Yale New Haven Transplant Center with an appointment as associate professor of medicine at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Caldwell focuses his research on clinical projects pertaining to liver transplantation, namely viral hepatitis, viral-related lymphoma, liver transplant survival, and hepatic myelopathy.
