Yale Urology welcomes two new faculty members, starting August 1st.
Assistant Professor Brian Shinder, MD, will be part of our clinical urology division.
“We look forward to Dr. Shinder joining our Greenwich based faculty,” says Michael Karellas, MD, director of urology’s western region. “His specialty training in oncology will allow us to provide additional treatment options for men with prostate cancer who are interested in focal therapy, and his robotic training complements and expands our current minimally invasive surgical approaches.”
Shinder will also treat patients with non-cancerous urologic conditions.
He was most recently at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, where he completed a fellowship in urologic oncology.
Shinder received his medical degree and a certificate in clinical and translational sciences at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
He has published more than 30 articles and has won various awards, including the 2023 ASCO Conquer Cancer Young Investigator Award.
Shinder lives in Westchester County, New York, with his wife Christine, 4-year-old daughter, Juliette, and 6-month-old twin girls, Delilah and Mackenzie.
Assistant Professor William Kim, PhD, will be part of our oncology division as a full-time research investigator.
Dr. Kim comes to us from the University of California San Diego School of Medicine Division of Genomics and Precision Medicine and the Moores Cancer Center.
He earned his PhD in molecular genetics from Duke University Medical Center and was a postdoctoral fellow at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, then an instructor at Harvard Medical School. He also trained at the Broad Institute of Harvard and M.I.T., where he is currently a visiting scholar.
“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. William Kim and his innovative research program that is an ideal complement to the growing cancer and translational research portfolio in the Department of Urology,” says Michael Leapman, MD, MHS, Yale Urology’s vice chair of research.
Kim has authored more than 30 articles in leading cancer research journals, and recently completed his work on the California Governor’s Office Initiative to Advance Precision Medicine. He was the co-lead principal investigator from 2019 to 2024. He has been invited to present nationally and internationally and has served as peer reviewer for a number of journals.
“I look forward to joining the department and making research contributions that can save the lives of patients with cancer,” says Kim.
Outside the laboratory, he enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters, performing music wit, and visiting national parks.
