Yale Surgery took its commitment to Diversity, Equity & Inclusion to the national stage last month at the 2023 Society of Black Academic Surgeons (SBAS) annual meeting in Ann Arbor, MI. With more than 500 attendees, the thirty-third annual event was the largest held by the society.
Vice Chair of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion for the Department of Surgery, Paris Butler MD, MPH, was heavily involved in the Sept. 28-30 meeting, providing welcoming remarks during the Local High School Outreach program, chairing the Health Disparities & Equity Committee, and presenting on the successes of the Diverse Surgeons Initiative (DSI) 2.0. Bridgeport Hospital Chair of Surgery Karen E. Gibbs, MD moderated a scientific session on critical care transplant.
Richard Maduka, MD, and Michelle Salazar, MD, MHS, received additional honors for their participation in the Diverse Surgeons Initiative 2.0, designed to enhance residents’ professional growth.
Institutional members since 2018, the Yale School of Medicine Department of Surgery is a proud sponsor of the SBAS mission. For opportunities and to get involved, individuals are encouraged to contact Faculty Liaison, Dr. Butler.
