Two Department of Internal Medicine faculty are awardees of the Rosemarie L. Fisher, MD, Excellence in Graduate Medical Education Awards for 2022.
The winners of the 2022 Rosemarie L. Fisher, MD, Excellence in Graduate Medical Education Awards for Program Directors/Associate Program Directors are John Moriarty, MD, FACP, program director for Internal Medicine’s Primary Care Residency Program, and Silvio Inzucchi, MD, fellowship program director for the Section of Endocrinology & Metabolism.
“These awards recognize the accomplishments of our colleagues in GME in honor of Dr. Fisher, who has devoted much of her professional career to GME and had a profound impact here at Yale and beyond,” said Stephen J. Huot, MD, PhD, professor of medicine (nephrology), and senior associate dean for Graduate Medical Education (GME) at Yale School of Medicine (YSM).
The winners were announced on September 14 and were selected based on nominations from trainees, faculty, and staff.
John Moriarty, MD, FACP, associate professor of medicine (general medicine), has served as the program director of the Primary Care Residency Program since 2015. For the year prior, he served as the associate program director, and from 2005 - 2013, he was associate program director for the Internal Medicine Traditional Residency Program. Moriarty is a graduate of the University of Maryland Medical School and completed internal medicine residency training at Yale.
“Dr. Moriarty is a strong mentor for both the residents and faculty, as well as a proponent for lifelong learning. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and has given many national presentations,” said Huot.
Silvio Inzucchi, MD, professor of medicine (endocrinology), earned his medical degree at Harvard Medical School and continued clinical training as a resident and fellow at Yale. He has been with YSM in various roles, from medical director of the Diabetes Center, clinical chief of the Section of Endocrinology & Metabolism, and director of the Affiliated Hospitals Program. Inzucchi joined the Yale faculty in 1994 and became the program director of the Endocrinology Fellowship program in 2004.
“Dr. Inzucchi’s outstanding leadership is reflected by the fact that the program has been continuously reaccredited without difficulty during his tenure,” noted Huot.
“Every year I feel extremely proud about each of these winners and what they have accomplished in medical education and done to support the development of our trainees and our faculty. I am especially proud of the awardees this year, as I was with them from the beginning of their career at Yale,” exclaimed Rosemarie L. Fisher, MD, professor emerita of medicine (digestive diseases); emerita director of Resident/Fellow Well-being; and Title IX Deputy Coordinator in the Office of the Provost. “Dr. Inzucchi spent his first six weeks at Yale on a VA rotation where I was the attending and Dr. Moriarty was one of the last group of chief residents in my term as program director in internal medicine. I hoped that I played a small role in having them pursue their careers in medical education.”
The award was established in 2017 to honor Fisher who has devoted much of her professional career to graduate medical education. Fisher served as the Designated Institutional Official and Associate Dean of Graduate Medical Education (GME) since 1987, as well as the first residency program director in the history of the Department of Internal Medicine. She stepped down from her role in the GME office in 2016, succeeded by Huot.
“These awards recognize the accomplishments of Dr. Moriarty and Dr. Inzucchi, as they are both shining examples of our faculty commitment to the education of our trainees,” added Vincent Quagliarello, MD, vice chair for Education and Academic Affairs in the Department of Internal Medicine. The department of Internal Medicine at Yale is among the nation’s premier departments, bringing together an elite cadre of clinicians, investigators, educators, and staff in one of the world’s top medical schools.
