A Message From Joshua A. Copel, MD

June 06, 2022

Dear Colleagues,

CMS documentation and billing rules for professional billing for clinical care services keep changing. 2021 saw a major revamp in determining the level of outpatient E/M codes, updating rules that had been in place for over 20 years. 2022 saw major changes with the shared visit rules, which will change again in 2023. If you bill for shared visits, you should have been assigned a mandatory video to watch by June 30, 2022. Thank you in advance for completing this training, which describes significant changes as to who can bill for a shared visit. The video can be found at: http://workday.preview.yale.edu/MedSchool/SharedVisit/

In 2023 we expect changes to the inpatient and emergency room E/M code sets. We expect these will mirror the 2021 outpatient E/M changes, which we hope will make our lives easier with consistency between the code sets. As soon as we get more conclusive information, the compliance team will start creating educational tools to make implementation easier. As always, the compliance team is pleased to answer any questions you may have.
