15 Faculty Elected to Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering

Fifteen Yale faculty members — including the new dean of the Yale School of Medicine — are among the state’s leading experts in science, engineering, medicine, and technology who have been elected as members of The Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering (CASE).

The new CASE members — 36 in all — will be introduced at the academy’s 45th annual meeting and dinner on May 26 at The University of Connecticut (Storrs campus).

The newly elected members from Yale are:

  • Ron Adelman, professor of ophthalmology and visual science; director of the Retina and Macula Service, Yale School of Medicine
  • Nita Ahuja, the William H. Carmalt Professor and chair of the Department of Surgery, Yale School of Medicine; surgeon-in-chief, Yale New Haven Hospital; assistant director for surgery, Yale Cancer Center
  • Nancy J. Brown, dean of the Yale School of Medicine
  • Elizabeth Claus, professor of biostatistics; director of medical research, Yale School of Public Health
  • Erika J. Edwards, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology; curator of botany at the Yale Peabody Museum; director of Marsh Botanical Gardens; director of graduate studies
  • Nilay Hazari, professor of chemistry
  • Albert I. Ko, professor and chair of the Department of Epidemiology (microbial diseases); professor of medicine (infectious diseases); chair of the Department of Microbial Diseases, Yale School of Public Health
  • Ruth R. Montgomery, professor of medicine; director of CyTOF Facility; associate dean for scientific affairs, Yale School of Medicine
  • Peter N. Peduzzi, professor of biostatistics; director of the Yale Center for Analytical Sciences; director of the Yale Data Coordinating Center, Yale School of Public Health
  • Rafael Perez-Escamilla, professor of epidemiology and public health; director of the Office of Public Health Practice; director of the global health concentration, Yale School of Public Health
  • David M. Post, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology
  • Nenad Sestan, the Harvey and Kate Cushing Professor of Neuroscience; professor of comparative medicine, of genetics and of psychiatry; executive director of the Genome Editing Center, Yale School of Medicine
  • Megan V. Smith, associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry, in the Child Study Center, and in public health (social and behavioral sciences); director of the Mental Health Outreach for Mothers Partnership; director of the Yale Child Study Center Parent and Family Development Program, Yale School of Medicine
  • Christian Tschudi, the John Rodman Paul Professor of Epidemiology; director of graduate studies, Yale School of Public Health
  • Paul E. Turner, the Rachel Carson Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Yale School of Medicine.

CASE elects members on the basis of their scientific and engineering distinction achieved through their significant contributions in theory or applications, as demonstrated by original published books and papers, patents, the pioneering of new and developing fields and innovative products, outstanding leadership of nationally recognized technical teams, and external professional awards in recognition of scientific and engineering excellence.

CASE was chartered by the Connecticut General Assembly in 1976 to provide expert guidance on science and technology to the people and to the state of Connecticut, and to promote the application of science and technology to human welfare and economic well-being.
