Biography

Dr. Cesia Gallegos, MD, MHS, FASNC, is an Assistant Professor of Medicine specializing in Cardiovascular Medicine, specifically in infiltrative cardiomyopathies and advanced cardiac imaging. Her clinical and research endeavors revolve around cardiac amyloidosis, sarcoidosis, and the intersection of advanced cardiac imaging techniques in diagnosing and managing these conditions.

Dr. Gallegos graduated Summa Cum Laude from Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras, where she earned her medical degree. She then completed residency and chief residency at the University of Miami-Miller School of Medicine. Her academic pursuits brought her to Yale, where she completed general and advanced cardiology fellowships with specialization in advanced cardiac imaging and infiltrative cardiomyopathies while serving as a chief fellow. During her fellowship training, she was awarded a Master in Health Science degree from the Yale School of Medicine. Her thesis focused on regional myocardial blood flow quantification with Rb-82 PET tracer and its relationship with angiographic stenoses. Her work resulted in several national and international presentations and awards. She was selected as “One to Watch” by the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging, awarded to the top 30 early career professionals in this area. She is also an American Society of Nuclear Cardiology (ASNC) Leadership Development Program graduate.

Dr. Gallegos is now a faculty member of the Advanced Imaging and Cardiomyopathy Programs at Yale New Haven Hospital, and Co-directs the Yale Cardiac Amyloidosis Program. Outside of her clinical and research interests, Dr. Gallegos has had a lifelong passion for medical education and teaching and was selected for the Department of Medicine Advancement of Clinician-Educator Scholarship (ACES) Faculty Development Program. In addition to her clinical roles, Dr. Gallegos serves as the Program Director for the Cardiovascular Imaging Fellowship and Associate Program Director for the General Cardiology Fellowship .

Clinical Care

Overview

Cesia Gallegos, MD, is a cardiologist who specializes in taking care of patients with a specific group of heart diseases called infiltrative cardiomyopathies, such as cardiac amyloid and sarcoid, which can cause arrhythmias, heart failure, and other cardiac dysfunctions. She also specializes in advanced cardiac imaging.

The intersection of advanced cardiovascular imaging as it pertains to treating a variety of cardiac conditions is her main passion. She says she chose this field after seeing the tremendous advances in the understanding of the function of the heart without any surgeries or invasive operations.

When patients have a heart condition they don’t understand, they can be very anxious at their first visit with a cardiologist, Dr. Gallegos explains. “Some patients really just need to hear that they aren’t dying,” she says. “First, I tell them we’re going to figure out why they are not feeling well and take it from there.”

Before she begins to address patients’ diseases, Dr. Gallegos asks questions to get to know them as individuals. “I ask about their friends or how they spend their weekends. I want them to leave knowing that someone cares about them as a whole and not just about their condition,” she says. “It’s rewarding when they leave with a smile, even though they’re sick.”

Outside of the clinic, Dr. Gallegos conducts clinical research in the use of nuclear cardiology modalities as they apply to coronary artery disease and cardiac sarcoidosis and amyloidosis. Specifically, her current research focuses in a unique type of stress test that allows doctors to non-invasively study blood flow through coronary arteries to detect blockages. Typically, these blockages are only found using a special invasive test called an angiogram. Additionally, she is an active part of multiple studies and clinical trials focused on advancing the knowledge and treatment of infiltrative cardiomyopathies.
