February 22, 2018

Dr. Loren Laine, Yale gastroenterologist, has won the American Gastroenterological Association’s (AGA) highest honor, the Julius Friedenwald Medal. He will be presented with the honor at the annual Digestive Disease Week conference on June 25 in Washington, D.C.

Bestowed annually since 1941, the Friedenwald Medal recognizes physicians for their lifelong contributions to the field of gastroenterology. “Dr. Laine is known worldwide for his clinical research achievements, his role as an educator, and his decades of AGA leadership, including three separate terms on the AGA Governing Board and as AGA Institute President,” writes the AGA. “He is among the top clinical investigators and educators in gastroenterology, widely regarded as one of the world’s experts on gastrointestinal bleeding and upper gastrointestinal tract injury.”

The AGA also credits Laine with the establishment of the AGA Center for Gut Microbiome Research and Education, where he still serves as a chair and a principal investigator of the AGA National Fecal Microbiota Transplant Registry.

At the Yale School of Medicine, Laine is also director of clinical research. He practices clinical-translational care at the Yale Digestive Disease Center in Fairfield, Connecticut.
