Fellow Focus in Four (June)

June 06, 2019

Nikhil Singh, MD, PhD, fellow, nephrology

Why did you choose medicine and Yale?

I chose internal medicine because I was interested in a field that combined direct patient care, broad differential diagnoses, and complex medical decision making. I also had a research background and wished to perform basic science and translational research in a field related to the disease processes that I would be encountering in my patients. This made internal medicine an obvious choice, and I ultimately chose to subspecialize and pursue research in nephrology.

What was your path to Yale?

I graduated from a combined MD/PhD program in Pennsylvania and did my internal medicine and nephrology fellowship at Yale through the American Board of Internal Medicine short track pathway. I am now pursuing postdoctoral fellowship work, having completed my clinical fellowship training.

What is a fun fact about you?

My hobbies have included tennis, running, and golf, but I was once an avid “mileage runner,” booking cheap round-trip flights from the East to West Coast and back on the same day, purely to accrue frequent flier miles and elite status.

Perks of New Haven life?

New Haven is a very underrated and affordable city with excellent restaurants, bars, hiking, and cultural options in a compact area. It is very convenient to major cities in the East and excellent vacation spots like Cape Cod and the Hamptons. This city is great area for my wife and I to raise our 1.5-year-old son.
