Biography

Dr. Asnes provides diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterization services for children and adults with congenital heart disease. Procedures Dr. Asnes performs in the catheterization laboratory include trancatheter heart valve implantation, atrial septal defect (ASD) and patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure, patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) closure, transcatheter treatment of aortic and pulmonary valve stenosis, transcatheter treatment of coarctation of the aorta, intravascular stent placement, and coil occlusion procedures. Dr. Asnes has extensive experience in the use of intracardiac echocardiography and is able to perform many of these procedures without the use of general anesthesia.


Dr. Asnes joined the Yale Pediatric Cardiology Section in July, 2005 after receiving additional training in interventional cardiac catheterization at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.

Overview

Our team is actively participating in several studies evaluating new catheter based therapies for congenital heart disease.

The Medtronic Harmony Valve study is for patients who require a new pulmonary valve but want to avoid open heart surgery.

The Gore Medical ASSURRED study is evaluating the new CardioFORM ASD Occluder and provides a new way to close atrial septal defects without the need for open heart surgery.

The Gore Medical REDUCE study is evaluating the use of the CardioFORM Septal Occluder as a means of closing a patent foramen ovale to reduce the risk of cryptogenic stroke.

The Gore Medical RELIEF study is evaluating the use of the CardioFORM Septal Occluder as a means of closing a patent foramen ovale to reduce the migraine headache burden.

Overview

Jeremy Asnes, MD, chief of pediatric cardiology for Yale Medicine and co-director of the Yale New Haven Children's Hospital Heart Center, cares for children and adults with congenital heart disease, including heart valve and pulmonary artery problems. He is also active in clinical trials that evaluate cardiac devices that could provide better solutions for patients.

“Congenital cardiac catheterization is a fascinating and exciting field,” Dr. Asnes says. “New technologies are being developed at an increasingly rapid pace, allowing us to treat problems that once required open heart surgery with a far less invasive catheter-based procedure. Patients who once required multiple open heart surgeries are now able to either eliminate or significantly reduce the number of surgeries they need.”

At Yale, the cardiac catheterization practice is unique in that it brings together both adult and pediatric interventional cardiologists. “Combining these different areas of expertise allows us to tackle the most difficult cases and ensures that patients receive comprehensive care,” says Dr. Asnes, who is an associate professor of pediatric cardiology at Yale School of Medicine.
