Thomas Murray, MD, PhD, FAAP Named Associate Chair for Quality and Safety in the Department of Pediatrics

We are pleased to announce that Thomas Murray, MD, PhD, FAAP has been named Associate Chair for Quality and Safety for the Department of Pediatrics at Yale School of Medicine, effective immediately.

Dr. Murray is a professor of pediatrics (infectious disease), the associate medical director for infection prevention at Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital, and an affiliated faculty member at the Yale Institute for Global Health. Upon taking this role, Dr. Murray will step down as fellowship program director for the section of pediatric infectious disease, a role he’s held since July 2021. Dr. Inci Yildirim will serve as fellowship program director for pediatric infectious diseases effective July 23, 2024.

After completing his MD and PhD at the University of Connecticut, Dr. Murray completed pediatric residency at Yale School of Medicine. He stayed at Yale to complete fellowships in pediatric infectious disease and medical microbiology. Previously an instructor of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry at Yale University and Associate Professor in the Department of Medical Sciences at the Frank H. Netter MD School of Medicine at Quinnipiac University, he returned to the faculty at Yale Pediatrics in 2018.

Since 2021, Dr. Murray has been a co-chair on the Children’s Health System Quality Safety & Infection Prevention Council, and a Quality Improvement Coach at the Pediatric Quality Academy since 2023. He’s also been an associate editor for the journal Frontiers in Pediatrics (Infectious Disease Section) and a peer reviewer at Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal, Games for Health, Vaccines, Current Opinion in Pediatrics, Pediatrics, Antimicrobial Stewardship and Healthcare Epidemiology, PlosOne, and the Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health from 2021-2024, among many others previously.

In 2022, Dr. Murray received the Champion of Children Award from the Center for Children’s Advocacy in Connecticut and was the recipient of the Department of Pediatrics’ 2021 Norman J. Siegel Faculty Award, given to a faculty member who consistently displays high standards of patient care, generosity, collegiality, and leadership. He was also named a Healthcare Hero by Yale New Haven Hospital in 2021.

In his new role, Dr. Murray will focus on, developing a quality and safety strategic plan, assisting with ways to improve the departmental and children’s hospital culture of safety, mentoring junior faculty in quality improvement (QI), overseeing some of the QI & safety portfolios, and becoming a member of the core faculty of the Pediatric Quality Academy.
