Overview

Ryan Rimmer, MD, is an otolaryngologist (ear, nose, and throat specialist) trained in advanced sinus and skull base surgery.

The son of an art teacher, Dr. Rimmer says he was always drawn to both art and science. “I grew up using my hands in art, which led to an interest in surgery,” he says.

Dr. Rimmer specializes in treating chronic rhinosinusitis, nasal polyposis, nasal obstruction, epistaxis(nose bleeds), olfactory dysfunction, cerebrospinal fluid leaks, and sinonasal tumors. He collaborates with neurosurgeons and ophthalmologists to manage skull base and orbital (tumor within the eye socket) diseases through minimally invasive, endoscopic, transnasal approaches.

“We use long, narrow instruments that we insert through the nose. No incision is required and we are able to do our work in the sinuses and access the anterior skull base,” Dr. Rimmer explains. “For people with chronic rhinosinusitis and nasal polyps, it can help them dramatically and it’s extremely gratifying to help them through minimally invasive surgery.”

When meeting a patient, Dr. Rimmer says he tries to validate their concerns and explain as much as possible. “I believe that the more you know, the better you will do. I explain the surgery and show them everything that will happen,” he says.

His research interests focus on outcomes for patients with rhinologic, skull base, and orbital disease.
