Graduating Residents and Fellows from the Yale Department of Pathology and the Department of Laboratory Medicine were honored at a June 10 graduation ceremony in Hamden.
“Today, we take the opportunity to recognize and celebrate the many accomplishments of this graduating class,” said Andrea Barbieri, MD, Executive Assistant Director of the Pathology Residency Training Program. “They have dedicated themselves to the care of patients, pursuit of scholarly work and research, and committed themselves to the study and rigor necessary to become exceptional physicians.”
Chen Liu, MD, PhD, Chair of Yale Pathology, said the graduating Residents and Fellows showed exceptional tenacity for persevering during a pandemic.
“This is a really great accomplishment, particularly considering that for the Residents, half your time was affected by COVID, and for the Fellows, the entire time,” Dr. Liu said. “This reflects your resilience, courage, and dedication that got you where you are today.”
Dr. Liu also said the support the Residents and Fellows received from “your families, mentors, colleagues, and teammates contributed significantly to your success.”
Brian Smith, MD, Chair of Laboratory Medicine, said this year’s graduating class stood out because the Residents and Fellows worked so well together.
“It is always a delight to watch the Fellows interacting with the Residents and the Residents interacting with each other,” Dr. Smith said. “Frankly, it makes the life of all the attendings so much easier.”
Dr. Liu recently announced that Diane Kowalski, MD, MMSc, was ending her 10-year tenure as Director of the Pathology Residency Training Program and Dr. Barbieri was appointed as her successor. Dr. Kowalski was unable to attend due to a prior commitment, but Dr. Liu thanked her “for her many years of contribution to the Residency Program’s development.”
