    Dr. Liu joined Yale Eye Center as Assistant Professor in July 2013.  After graduating from medical school magna cum laude, he served as Postdoctoral Fellow and then Research Associate at the Scheie Eye Institute, University of Pennsylvania.  There Dr. Liu was grant-funded and won the 2004 Annual Research Award. He completed his Ophthalmology Residency at George Washington University, where he was appointed for a term as Chief Resident and received an Interdisciplinary Research Fund award.  Following a distinguished year as Clinical Glaucoma Fellow at Yale Eye Center, Dr. Liu joined Yale University Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science as a full-time faculty.  Dr. Liu is dedicated to patient care, medical education, and research. He routinely performs complex lens, iris, and glaucoma surgeries. Along with his colleagues, Dr. Liu has introduced multiple novel glaucoma surgeries, including I-stent, I-track, and Xen Gel Stent, to the Yale-New Haven Hospital. Because of his excellent care, Dr. Liu has helped numerous patients restore their vision or stop their glaucoma from progressing. In 2022, Dr. Liu was recognized as Connecticut Magazine's Top Doctor by his peers.Dr. Liu works closely with medical students, residents, and fellows. He is passionate about medical education. His dedication to resident education was recognized by receiving the prestigious Bruce Shields Award for Excellence in Teaching twice since he joined Yale. Dr. Liu's research interests include medical and surgical management of glaucoma, ophthalmic laser, cataract surgery, premium intraocular lens implant, complex anterior segment surgeries, and medical education. His bibliography includes over fifty scientific publications including papers and book chapters, as well as many years of invited presentations at regional, national and international professional conferences.

    Dr. Martone received his B.A. from Providence College and his M.D. from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where he also completed his ophthalmology residency. In addition, he received a master’s degree in public health in epidemiology from The Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health.  He received fellowship training in glaucoma at Duke University and has also completed fellowships at The Wilmer Eye Institute (Preventive Ophthalmology), Bethesda Eye Institute (International Ophthalmology), and Cullen Eye Institute of Baylor University (International Ophthalmology).Dr. Martone has served on the faculty teaching at The Doheny Eye Institute of the University of Southern California School of Medicine, as well as within the International Eye Foundation, Bethesda, Maryland, and at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard Medical School, and the Glaucoma Service, New York Eye and Ear Infirmary.  He was Medical Director of ORBIS International, a global nongovernmental organization dedicated to fighting blindness worldwide, and, through this, oversaw teaching of clinical and surgical ophthalmology in countries around the world. He has personally worked in over 100 locations in more than eighty countries.  He has worked extensively in countries such as China, Cuba, Cameroon, India, and Mongolia.  He was also Director of the Eye Clinic, Victoria Hospital, Castries, St. Lucia and Consultant Ophthalmologist to the Ministry of Health, St Lucia.Prior to joining the department as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology and Visual Science, Dr. Martone held a voluntary appointment as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the Yale School of Medicine where he received the residency program’s Excellence in Teaching Award.  He is an attending ophthalmologist at the Veterans Administration Hospital in West Haven, CT.  He is president of the Connecticut Society of Eye Physicians.  He is a past president of the New York Glaucoma Society and is a founding member of the Connecticut Glaucoma Society. He is a member of several other professional societies, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgery.During his many years of experience as a glaucoma specialist, Dr. Martone has routinely lectured in the United States and countries around the globe, with well over 100 presentations.  Moreover, he is the author of numerous scientific and clinical articles and papers in peer-reviewed journals, as well as being an author of chapters in books on the subject of ophthalmology.
  • Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Science

    Dr. Sarrafpour is a board certified fellowship trained glaucoma specialist at the Yale Eye Center. He graduated summa cum laude from Tufts University where he was also inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. He then completed medical school at Tufts University School of Medicine where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. Afterwards he completed his residency training at New York University and glaucoma fellowship at Yale University. Following his fellowship training, Dr. Sarrafpour joined the glaucoma faculty at Yale University and provides care in New Haven and Stratford. Dr. Sarrafpour provides medical and surgical care for glaucoma as well as anterior segment issues including cataracts. He performs glaucoma laser procedures, anterior segment and cataract surgery including premium intraocular lens implants, micro invasive glaucoma surgeries including istent, goniotomy, trabeculotomy procedures, cyclophotocoagulation, etc.) as well as traditional glaucoma surgeries like glaucoma drainage implants and trabeculectomy. He has brought novel glaucoma techniques/surgeries to Yale including the OMNI procedure. Additionally, he has contributed to several textbook chapters including Shield's Textbook of Glaucoma (7th edition) and he has presented at numerous meetings including the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and at the Prism Eye Rounds (December 2020 https://youtu.be/YAYu9KfAdzc?t=3171). Dr. Sarrafpour remains dedicated to patient care, resident and fellow education, and has published and presented at numerous meetings. His research interests include machine learning, imaging and glaucoma, resident and patient education, and minimally invasive procedures. His research efforts are conducted with the Yale Glaucoma Research Group.
