Andrea Barbieri, MD, Takes Over as Director of Pathology Residency Training Program

August 01, 2022

Andrea Barbieri, MD, Assistant Professor of Pathology, assumed the position of Director of the Pathology Residency Training Program on August 1.

Dr. Barbieri had been serving as Executive Assistant Program Director since earlier this year, when Chen Liu, MD, PhD, Chair of Yale Pathology, announced that Diane Kowalski, MD, MMSc, was ending her 10-year tenure as Program Director and would be succeeded by Dr. Barbieri.

Previously, Dr. Barbieri had served as Associate Program Director. Rita Abi Raad, MD, will succeed Dr. Barbieri as Associate Program Director.

The program provides outstanding training in all aspects of pathology and laboratory medicine, as well as opportunities for research and individualized study. The program's mission is to give its residents the strong scientific and medical foundation needed to excel in practice and become leaders in the field.

“Resident education is one of the key missions of the department,” Dr. Liu noted.

Dr. Barbieri is already settling into her new position. She recently said she is preparing to recruit next year’s class but will first evaluate some aspects of the application review and interview processes “to make sure we’re having holistic reviews.”

She also said she wants to initiate broader curriculum discussions.

“We’ll be developing a strategic plan to look at the curriculum and determine how to best engage folks who want to participate in these discussions and ensure we get input from the various services,” Dr. Barbieri said.

In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Dr. Barbieri provides clinical care as a surgical pathologist with expertise in endocrine, head and neck, gastrointestinal and liver pathology, and is board-certified in anatomic and clinical pathology. She also co-leads the Community and Visibility working group of the Dean's Advisory Council on LGBTQI+ Affairs.
