Greetings, all –
While last week’s verdict in Minneapolis found Derek Chauvin guilty of the murder of George Floyd, the structures remain that maintain racial inequalities and facilitate violence against members of our minority and marginalized communities. Adam Toledo. Daunte Wright. Ma’Khia Bryant. Too many names.
And so, taking heart in a quote from President Salovey’s April 20th email: “We must continue to focus our energy on addressing racism, injustice, and abuse of power by the police and others in positions of public trust and authority.” This email space has included links and information about talks on racism and society and racism and medicine, as education is the first step toward action and we – as physicians - are in positions of public trust and authority. For those who missed Jana Christian’s Medical Grand Rounds last Thursday (“A New Era of Antiracism in Medicine: Unravelling Our Past to Relearn for Our Future”), I highly encourage you to watch it and feel inspired about how we can focus our energy going forward.
