LETTER FROM ITALY, 1944: A NEW AMERICAN ORATORIO, a one hour documentary produced and directed by Karyl Evans and narrated by Meryl Streep. The film tells the story of the making of a new American masterwork based on the life of the Yale Medical School trained doctor, John K. Meneely Jr. who served as a medic in the 10th Mountain Division during World War II. The oratorio was written by Dr. John Meneely Jr.’s two daughters and tells the story of their father’s life before, during, and after the war when he suffered with post-traumatic stress disorder. The film chronicles the making of the premiere performance of the oratorio in Middletown, CT and the ways in which the Meneely family, veterans, and the general public have been affected by this important humanities project.
