YCC Humanities in Medicine Program: "Attitudes Toward Suicide in Art: From the Trojan War to the 21st Century"

This humanities seminar depicts how suicide and attitudes toward suicide have been portrayed by artists from the Trojan War (Ajax falling on his sword) to the last Century (Andy Warhol’s Disaster Paintings). It focuses on how attitudes toward suicide have fluctuated over time: heroic suicide, suicide as a crime, suicide as a way of dying, suicide as apotheosis. Artists shown will include William Blake, Frida Kahlo, Manet, Rembrandt, Picasso, and Andy Warhol.
