YCC Humanities in Medicine / Howard Spiro Lecture Series: "Conversations with Caregivers to Future Caregivers"

The Multicultural Lecture

Alita Anderson, MD, Author and Performance Artist with readings by Yale School of Medicine students Lorenzo Sewanan, Matt Meizlish, and Christine Sunu

Alita Anderson has been an artist writer in residence at YSM where she has mentored students in an initiative that entailed the eliciting of stories from individuals who care for the future caregivers. As students learn how to care for patients, they are in turn being cared for every day. Many individuals, often uncelebrated, dedicate themselves to making sure that students have what they need to thrive: the custodians who tend the buildings in which they live and learn, the bus drivers who transport them and keep them safe, the cooks who prepare the meals that sustain them… This reading celebrates our experiences in The Art of Caring Workshop where the stories of the caregivers Pearly Murphy, Chris Ferguson, and Lhamu Bhutia will be shared to demonstrate what it truly means to care for another person as a part of one’s daily life.
